Translation and creativity

The work done by translators, even on technical contents, always includes a part of creativity, which may be more or less important depending on the type of text. Because translating means writing, or rewriting texts in another language as if they originated in that language.

There are days when words seem to come out almost on their own; others when you’d bang your head against the wall even to write the shopping list.

That is why I find it is important to have enough time to work properly on a text. With time and experience you learn to choose the right customers and the texts most suited to your skills, because not every day is the same. And because we are not machines, which, as we know, don’t do very well with creativity.
